Beyond Computers:
Appropriate Technologies for Young Children
"I tell my college students that if I could choose only one
piece of equipment for my early childhood classroom that I would choose blocks.
"But Mr. Graves," a brave student invariably begins, "the
children in my after-school job just use blocks to hit each other.
So, we took them away. The discussion usually centers on the appropriate
use of blocks with young children.
"It is like that with markers or computers or sand
tables or televisions or books: how we use them matters.
Let's take a look at several tools--technologies--and explore their
appropriate and inappropriate uses."

Infant Spirituality
If the birth of children is such a spiritual experience for men, is
it possible that it is not just fathers but the infant who is having
a spiritual experience?

Summer Treat:
What can you make with ice,
salt, milk, vanilla, & sugar?
Ice cream, of course! Follow
the directions below:
Ingredients/supplies: large ziplock bag, small ziplock bag, ice, salt, 1/2
cup of milk, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1/8 teaspoon of vanilla.
Fill 1/3 of a large ziplock bag with ice. Put 6 tablespoons of salt on top of
the ice. Then, in the smaller ziplock bag mix 1/2 cup of milk, 1 tbsp of sugar,
1/8 teaspoon of vanilla. Close the bag and put it inside the larger bag. Shake
for about five minutes.
You can also use large and small coffee cans instead of ziplocks.

Kicking Kids Out for Biting?
Removing children from child care settings for biting
troubles me. It represents our failure as adults to meet the needs of the
children in our care—all of them. I don’t like failure as the end of the
road; I like failure as an opportunity to grow and improve.

Are We Teaching Our Children to Be
Biased Against Differences?
When my daughter Jessica was three
years old she came home from the child care center--the
very one in which I taught--and told me that "black
people don't like white people to come to their houses!"
I was shocked. This article looks at the small things that
adults do
that may create and encourage biased attitudes on the part of our
children. To read more, click here.

Well-Parented?
Is your child well-parented? I spent
some time last weekend with a 9-1/2 month old child who
clearly was well-parented. How do I know?
